Hide Folders
Help for version 6

Download the latest version of the program from this page.

Quick guide

How to use Hide Folders
When you launch Hide Folders an empty window will appear. You will be able to add files and folders into it by simply drag and drop them from the Finder, or by choosing the 'Add Items' menu item that can be found under the Edit menu. Once you have items in the window you'll be able to hide them by selecting them and then clicking the Hide button in the toolbar or choosing the 'Hide Selected Items' menu item under the Edit menu. Hidden items icons will have a transparent look. To make hidden items visible, select them and click the 'Show' button in the toolbar or choose the 'Show Selected Items' menu item under the Edit menu. To open items from the Hide Folders window make them visible first, then double click them just like you do in the Finder or alternatively choose the 'Open Selected Item' menu item under the File menu. To reveal items in the Finder from the Hide Folders window make them visible first, then choose the 'Reveal Selected Item' menu item under the File menu.

Removing items from the Hide Folders window
Finally to remove items from the Hide Folders window make them visible first, then drag them out of the Hide Folders window and they'll disappear in a puff cloud. Alternatively choose the 'Remove Selected Item' menu item under the File menu.

Using menu and customize the behavior
Please note that all these menu items are replicated for convenience access in the Action menu (that one in the toolbar with a gear icon) and in the Contextual menu. You can also slightly customize the behavior of Hide Folders in the Preferences pane.

Hide Folder does not delete or make copies of your files and folders
Hide Folder does not delete or make copies of your files and folders, it just ”hides” them. To do so it uses standard Mac OS X Finder functionalities to make items invisible to the user. This means that, even though you don't see them in the Finder, all your hidden files and folders are still there where you put them. This also means that if you make a copy of a folder containing hidden items they will be copied as well. If you delete a folder containing hidden items they will be deleted as well, they're gone forever unless you have a backup copy of that folder somewhere.

Advanced topics

How Hide Folders works
When you add a folder to hide into Hide Folders, the application stores information about its location in a fìle stored inside your user's Application Support folder. It's like making an alias to that file. If you move on another computer (or even to another user on the same computer) Hide Folder reads the information stored in that computer's (or other user's) Application Support folder which of course knows nothing about what's stored on the Application Support folder of the other computer (or other user). So if you mount an external drive on computer 1 and hide some file stored on that drive with Hide Folders, then when you mount that same drive on computer 2 Hide Folders will not be able to see the hidden file because it doesn't know it exists. How can this be solved?

Try this:

  • Mount again the external drive on computer
  • Launch Hide Folders Make that hidden file visible, but don't remove it from the Hide Folders window Now mount the drive on computer
  • Launch Hide Folders Add that file in the Hide Folders window.

Now both computers know where that file is and each copy of Hide Folders should be able to hide or show it when that drive is mounted.

In order to recover a hidden folder or file, just follow the guidelines posted in the troubleshoting section of this page.

Troubleshooting

Recover a not listed and hidden folder or file
In order to recover a not listed and hidden folder, do as follows:

  • If possible, turn visible any folder you previously hiden using the program.
  • Download the latest version of the program from this page.
  • Launch the downloaded version and from Edit menu choose "Add Items" while pressing the option-key. On the dialog window that pop-ups you will be able to select either a visible or an invisible folder or file.

Note: Make sure not to turn visible a folder or a file used by either Mac OS X or a third-party application.

Open the program if you forgot the password
Whether you forgot the password, delete this folder:

/Users/<you>/Library/Application Support/Altomac/Hide Folders/

Note: when deleting this file the program will be reset and you'll find the item list empty. Please note that there are thousands of hidden items in Mac OS X, so in order to recover your hidden folders of files (if any), you'll need to know where them are located, please see "Recover a not listed and hidden folder or file" section of this manual.

I just downloaded your version 2 Hide Folders, when I try to open the application I get a window "Invalid Canvas Reference".
Please do as follows:

  • Delete the folders located at:

/Users/<you>/Library/Preferences/Altomac/Hide Folders/

/Users/<you>/Library/Application Support/Altomac/Hide Folders/

  • Launch the program in order to recreate from scratch the resources it needs.

The program don't keep the registration code
In one of the previous versions of the program there was a bug that prevented to register the program with some particular system configurations. Whether the program forgot you entered the registration code, do as follows:

  • Turn visible any folder you previously hiden using the program.
  • Quit the program if it is running, and delete the folders located at:

/Users/<you>/Library/Preferences/Altomac/Hide Folders/

/Users/<you>/Library/Application Support/Altomac/Hide Folders/

  • Download the latest version of the program from this page.
  • Launch the program in order to recreate from scratch the resources it needs.

Notes about security

How the program works
This program uses the standard functionality of the operating system to make folders and files invisible. Programmers and experienced users could gain access to a folder or a file made invisible. Also please be warned that there are some applications that let you open files contained in a folder made invisible.

There are some ways to see hidden items
Some applications and utilities come with extended facilities to view and manipulate files, regardless their visibility status. The program cannot do anything to prevent this situation (as any other program that we are aware), since this could lead to dangerous scenarios as system stability issues. Altomac Hide Folders provides a simple interface to deal with the Mac OS System visibility property and does not patch it or interferes with the System performance. The same applies to the Finder: Altomac Hide Folders relies on the Finder services, and does not modify any of its internals. Whether you need advanced levels for protecting your data, there are other ways as protecting information on removable media or using Mac OS X FileVault. To learn more about Protecting information on removable media and on Mac OS X FileVault open Mac OS X Finder's Help.
