iPhone Duo in star white and night sky

Within days of launch, people who had just paid for an iPhone Duo started posting the same failure: the inner display cracks near the crease, often with a bright line across the panel. Some felt the hinge stick. Some heard a pop. Then the screen that was supposed to justify the price was ruined.

Apple eventually answered — not with a teardown, not with a number, and not with a recall. With a statement. The company said it was “aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units,” and that affected owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement. That is Apple’s story. It is not automatically yours.

The calm words, and what they leave out

Apple assures early reaction has been “incredibly positive.” It says most Duos are not susceptible, and that bad units tend to fail quickly. Read that as a buyer: there is still no count, no named part, and no explanation for why the damage clusters in the same place. “Small number” protects the launch. It is not a measurement you can check.

What the evidence shows anyway

Independent teardowns, including iFixit’s, point at the hinge stack under that spot — pressure on a thin inner panel. Apple has neither confirmed nor denied it. It changed the subject to AppleCare. Fake AI photos of cracked Duos have circulated too; that muddies the public count, it does not erase the units already swapped in stores or the owners left waiting on thin replacement stock.

Apple’s fix is a counter, not a redesign

According to Apple, you contact AppleCare for a replacement. A manufacturing defect should sit under the limited warranty whether or not you bought AppleCare+. In practice the burden is yours: document the damage, book the visit, hope a Duo is still in the back room.

By late October the company had also circulated a quiet memo to Apple Stores and Authorized Service Providers: inspect, then repair or replace under “standard procedures.” That is how you run a response without saying “recall.” It is also how Genius Bars become gatekeepers — and how some owners already report being told their crack looks like a drop, not the known issue. There is still no consumer-facing program page that says: this specific failure is covered, period.

A swap ends your afternoon. It does not tell you whether the next unit shares the same risk. Replacing inventory is cheaper, in reputation terms, than publishing a failure rate. For buyers, the soft landing still means waits, arguments at the counter, and a launch story that asks you to feel lucky if you are fine.

If your inner display shows lines or a crease crack after ordinary opening, document it and ask AppleCare about the issue Apple has already acknowledged to the press. Push back if service reframes it as accidental damage. Treat Cupertino’s calm language as what it is: useful for getting a phone replaced, insufficient for deciding whether the foldable bet is safe for your money.

The final question

If Apple can admit the crack only in the smallest possible sentence — and fix you only with another Duo from the same bin — who is the replacement really protecting: the owner, or the story of a flawless first foldable?
